19 A SERVICE OF THE WORD Pentecost docx
John 15.26-27, 16.4b-15
Jesus spoke to his disciples: ‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.
‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.’

Let us all join together in prayer.
On this Whit Sunday when we celebrate the very beginnings of the Church in the world, we pray for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in all that we do.
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
In this time of plague, trouble and confusion, O Lord, we pray that you will keep us in your mercy and protection. In the uncertainties after the end of lockdown, Oh Lord, unlock our faith so that we may live in expectation, not despair. Enlighten our darkness.
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
We pray for our troubled world. In particular we remember those countries suffering intensely from the pandemic, those peoples inflicted by oppressive regimes, and those caught up in violence and disaster. May God’s protection urgently be granted to them all.
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
We give thanks for all those who have been inspired by the Holy Ghost to love their neighbours: in particular for those who care for the sick, and the many who provide the services our society relies upon.
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
We give thanks for the people who are leading St Peter’s during the interregnum, especially Eckart, Sarah, Matthew, and Irena. May they be granted wisdom, energy and enthusiasm. We pray that with God’s inspiration we may find a sympathetic and inspired new leader. And we give thanks for all who worship here, make music and support our Church in so many ways.
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
We pray for those who have recently died, and for those who grieve for them. And also for those whose anniversaries we remember.
Vera George, Renee Flower, John Stock, Henry England, William Gregory, Rose German, Alan Butler and May Malcolm
Lord meet as in the silence.
And hear our prayer.
Oh Lord, every day in this parish, hundreds of prayers are offered to you by many people inside and outside this Church, like arrows shot to heaven. They echo our thoughts and fears, our joys and our sorrows. They continue our Whitsun worship into our everyday lives. Oh Lord in your mercy hear our prayers now and listen for those we will utter up in the coming weeks and years.
Merciful God, accept these prayers for the sake of your son our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen
